East India Company established base at Surat in first decade of 1600's but suffered competition from established Portugese interests.
Required to develop alternative markets
- - Looked to Persia
  - Capture of Ormuz in 1622 broke Portugese control of Persian Gulf
  - Participants included
    1. 1. William Baffin killed in the battle
      2. Nicholas Woodcock who is notable for giving passage to Pietro della Valle who is notable for bringing back the first recorded examples of cuneiform inscriptions to Europe
  - Opening to trade led to expeditions of Thomas Herbert and Robert Shirley
