Surat was a port in Gujurat used by East India company ships in the 1600's prior to their acquistion of Bombay (Mumbai). As such it featured in many of the early English journeys to wither the Mughal court in Delhi or the the court of the Shah of Persia.

Surat was also a major pilgrim port for pilgrims sailing to Arabia for the Hajj.
